For those who love clarity, nuance, and ritual in their coffee, pour-over brewing is unmatched. It highlights the delicate tasting notes of high-quality beans — especially lighter roasts — and gives you full control over the final cup.

Here’s how to master the pour-over method from home.

☕ What Is Pour-Over?

Pour-over is a manual brewing technique where hot water is poured evenly over ground coffee in a filter. The coffee drips into a carafe or mug below. Unlike immersion methods (like French Press), pour-over gives you cleaner, more layered flavours — perfect for appreciating single-origin beans.

🛠 What You’ll Need

• Hario V60 or Kalita Wave brewer

• Paper filters

• Gooseneck kettle (for control)

• Digital scale

• Timer

• Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine grind, like table salt)

• Filtered water just off the boil (92–96°C)

📏 The Brew Guide (V60)

Coffee-to-Water Ratio: 18g coffee to 300g water (1:16.7)

1. Prep your filter

Place the filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. This removes paper taste and preheats the brewer.

2. Add ground coffee

Use medium-fine coffee. Level the bed.

3. Start the timer & bloom

Pour 40g of water to saturate all grounds. Let it sit for 30–45 seconds. This “bloom” releases gas and preps for even extraction.

4. Slow, steady pour

Add water in slow spirals until you reach 300g by 2:30 minutes. Keep the water level consistent and avoid pouring down the sides.

5. Let it drip

Finish pouring around 2:30. The total brew time should land between 2:45–3:15.

6. Enjoy immediately

Serve it straight or swirl gently in the server to mix layers.

🔍 Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Pouring too fast → weak brew

• Wrong grind size → over or under extraction

• Uneven pouring → patchy flavours
